City of Great Falls Awarded 2015 Healthy Workforce Productivity Award

The City of Great Falls is the recipient of the first annual Montana Association of Health Care Providers (MAHCP) Healthy Workforce Productivity Award. The award recognizes leadership in the area of health and productivity and honors an employer that has worked with its employees to develop, implement, and measure an innovative health and productivity initiative.

Since 2009, the City of Great Falls Civic Center, Library, Public Works, Park and Recreation, and Police Departments have been working with Penny Paul, City-County Health Department Community Health Education Specialist, to implement worksite wellness programs through the Montana Cancer Control Program (MCCP). Paul uses the Wellness Council of America’s (WELCOA) proven “Seven Benchmarks of Successful Worksite Wellness Programs.” Wellness teams then focus on the appropriate interventions needed to use for the health risks the teams have selected and begin to create a supportive environment taking many forms from policy creation, physical modifications, and rewards to employee incentives.

The five sites throughout the City of Great Falls, in collaboration with Paul, have created health promotion campaigns that are centered on improving employee health.  Programs offered vary from biometric screenings to physical activity and weight control programs.  City employees have taken part in walking breaks and attended lunch and learns, and the Great Falls Police Department has created a physical activity policy for those employees in jobs that had a challenge finding time to exercise.

“We have senior level support and passionate, engaged, and creative individuals on the wellness teams,” says Paul. “These teams have made great strides in implementing health promotion at their sites.”

Greg Doyon, City Manager, was also excited about the award and stated, “We are extremely proud of the work and accomplishments of our employee wellness teams. Penny’s guidance and enthusiasm has been a tremendous help in developing our wellness programs and health promotion campaigns.”

The Healthy Workforce Productivity award ceremony will be held in Bozeman on May 12-13, 2015. Paul and Dee Strending, employee with the City of Great Falls and Chair of the Public Works Wellness Team will receive the award on behalf of the City of Great Falls.
